Tayari's Blog: Report From The Road: Raleigh, NC

I think my recent reading at Peace College marks the official kick-off of the Book Tour for The Untelling. Things are off to a good start.

I'd accepted the invitation to speak at Peace College because their first year students all read my first novel, Leaving Atlanta. Also, Peace is a small women's college in the south, not unlike my alma mater, Spelman College. The weather in Raleigh was pretty awful, cold and wet, but the women of Peace certainly made the journey wothwile. My host, Bes Spangler, and the dynamic women of the English Department almost insprired me pack up and move south. The students asked me the hard questions and let me know that intellectual curiosity is alive and well in North Carolina.

I also got a chance to hang out with my good friend, Quinn Dalton. Her new book, Bulletproof Girl, will be out in April. I've read it. It's good. Really good.

I hadn't planned to give a public reading from The Untellilng; after all, conventional wisdom says that you don't read from a book until you have copies to sell. But after spending the day with such cool and smart people, I decided to share my new book anyway.

There's more to life than moving copies.

Thank you so much for coming and visiting Peace. Your reading started out as a requirment for my English 102 class, but it took on a whole new meaning when you began to read. I am only half way through the first part of Leaving Atlanta, but I can not seem to put it down. You are an amazing writer and speaker. It was like having story time from kindergarden when you began. I can not wait for your new book to come out. I left Monday night wondering what happen in The Untelling. Thank you again for coming.
