Tayari's Blog: Here's One For My Daddy

It's Father's Day, so I really must post an entry about the time this weekend which I have spent with my Dear Old Dad. As I blogged earlier, I was in Atlanta this weekend because Nikki Giovanni is being inducted into the HistoryMakers. But let us not forget that it is Father's Day weekend, too.
On Friday night, novelist E. Lynn Harris hosted Nikki at his condo. There was a nice reception, good champagne, live music. You get the idea. I was a little freaked out over the question of WHAT TO WEAR. I'm a literary writer, you know. We're not really famous for our fashion. Probably because we're not famous for our advances.. But that's not the point. I needed something to wear. Digging into my closet before I left town, I discovered a sweet mustard colored sundress. It's over ten years old, but it fit. So I packed it. Well, Thursday, when I tried to slip into it. one hour before the party-- I discovered the ZIPPER WAS BROKEN!
I ran downstairs where my dad was pecking away at the computer. "Daddy," I said. "You are going to have to sew me into my dress."
He looked up from his work and said, "Are you sure?"
I was sure.
So, Daddy rose to the occaision, sewing careful stitches up the back of my summer frock. Now, my dad is no Mr. Mom. Who knew that he could figure out which was the business end of a needle? The point is that I needed help and being the only one home, he gave it shot.
Tying off the thread he said, Just make a point to sit down real carefully."
"Okay," I said.
"And," he continued. "Don't get drunk. Or if you do, get REALLY drunk."
So, I went to the party. Most of the people there just regarded me as another guest. Nobody special. But they didn't know that as far as my daddy was concerned, I was the most special person there.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, DADDY!

Not only is he a good dad, Dr. Mack Jones is one of the great political minds that has ever come through Georgia. We need to hear his wisdom and observations again. It was good meeting you at E.Lynn's gathering for Nikki. Let me tell your readers that you got great props from Nikki and Pearl Cleage. So we expect continued great things from you in the future.

hi tayari, i'm reading "the untelling" now and loving it. just popped onto your blog for a treat to myself, and found your Father's Day post. It made me weep teeny-tiny happy tears, and made me think of a terrific father/daughter short story I want to recommend to you, but of course, title escapes me now... Hope you are enjoying a relaxing summer after all the excitement of the book tour, yay! (:
