Tayari's Blog: Let's Not Declare Open Season on the Messengers

I've gotten lots of feedback on my entry about Kanye West's outspoken response to the government ineptitude in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Many people are in support of Mr. West and others accuse him (and me!) of hate-mongering.

Has anyone noticed today that the people who speak out against hate are accused of creating hate? Kanye said, "George Bush doesn't care about Black People." That's it. I don't even think that would create a blip on the hate-monger radar.

I don't think that the citizens of this country should be kept from reporting the truths they know to be true for fear of "finger-pointing." Come on, what's THAT all about? That sounds like a fake-issue created by the people who are to blame. Who cares that there are mountains of evidence showing that the Feds did not do their jobs. Who cares about the incompetence and indifference about FEMA director, Michael Brown? Who cares are the rescue workers not allowed in. Who cares about what happened in St. Bernard Parrish. After all, we wouldn't want to be accused of pointing fingers, now would we?

I am in favor of the Kanye T-shirts, the bumper-stickers... anything that can create a public discourse on the way the poor are treated in this country. (Notice, I say the POOR.. not just the people of color.) We must have these conversations, there must be consciousness raising and we must DO something. People are dying, have died, and will continue to die.

The greatest of all ironies is that those most irate about Kanye's statements are those that have historically proven to not care about black people.

I'm wondering when people started getting offended by saying they didn't care about black people. Remember when being a "nigger lover" was actually worse than being a nigger?
