Book Tour
Despite the political tone I've recently adopted, I really am a literary blogger. Right now, I am at Wabash College serving as the Will Hays Visiting Writer.
Never heard of Wabash? It's a small all-male liberal arts college about forty miles outside of Indianapolis. I'm here as the invitation of my friend, Joy Castro, author of the new memoir, The Truth Book.
Yesterday, I had dinner with the members of the Hays family and the trustees of Wabash. I must say that it is refreshing to see such resources dedicated to the humanities. Mrs. Virginia Hays, who endowed the award in memory of her husband, a well respected writer.
Have you ever been to an all-men's campus? I haven't really visited one since I graduated from Spelman fifteen years ago. There's something special going on here. Who knew I could enjoy being called "ma'am" quite this much. (smile)
more later....

Thank you for a beautiful and generous visit. Students, staff, and faculty loved your reading, and the high school and middle school teachers who traveled here from across Indiana for your workshop couldn't say enough good things about you in their written evaluations of the event. It was an outstanding visit, one of the best I've had the pleasure to organize here at Wabash.
If anyone's cruising Tayari's website wondering if Tayari would make an awesome guest, the answer is, Yes, absolutely. She's a wonderfully kind and engaging teacher, she was patient with mishaps, and her after-the-reading Q&A was so well done, insightful, and funny that audience members later remarked that she should do political stand-up. How many visiting writers are glamorous, smart, compassionate, and hardworking, *and* have a great sense of humor?
Tayari, you were really the best kickoff to our writers series I could have dreamed of. Thank you so much.
Gratitude--
Joy

Literature and politics DO mix--all the time, actually. Keep it up, sez I. Your comments ring true for me. Here's a link to your own adopted state's big hope, who was on TV today. He went to Harvard Law School, graduated magna cum laude and served as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. He'll be the first black president, at which time, I hope, he'll finally unleash his truly compassionate heart:
