Tayari's Blog: Writing Again...

As you can probably guess, I am struggling with the beginning of a new novel. I came up with the idea months ago... I worked on it while I was on book tour. I have written over one hundred pages, but I have only one twenty-page chapter to show for it. I am not quite sure how I feel about this...

It's not like I don't have experience with writing my way into a story. I wrote about three different versions of The Untelling before I got the characters in the right places, struggling with the right conflicts. After the book is all done, I encourage people to make mistakes. "It's part of the process!" You should see my face when I tell folks this... All sincerity and encouragement. And I do believe this.

But still, it's sort of discouraging when you've worked so hard and so diligently and have so little to show for it. Even I, who have been here twice before sometimes have a little trouble reminding myself that this is just the way it goes.

I think I want to tell myself that it will get easier. That my fourth book will come out in one coherent piece, that I will sharpen my instincts and do it right the first time.

But okay. Enough of the pity-party. The blank page awaits me.

Dear Tayari,
The thing that makes you *such* a great writer is your clarity of purpose, your willingness, despite the down days, to cut ruthlessly, brood, wrangle, chisel, stare... in order to get it right. Not to mention your deep love for your characters. And humor. Can't wait to see more... we're behind you.

I admire the way you write. I think the ability to put pen to blank paper and just go at it is an awesome thing, no matter how long it takes. To me, those are the truly gifted writers and it just always leaves me in awe to see those who have this ability.
