I'm back from my four-day residency at Peace College in Raleigh, NC. It was such a lovely experience. Peace College is a small women's college, much like my own alma mater, Spelman College.

Over the course of the four days, I met with many classes throughout the humanities. The students were bright, energetic, and engaged. We talked about my books, we talked about what they like to read and what they care about.

Like I said earlier, I am a graduate of of a liberal arts college, and I did appreciate the experience. But going back as a FACULTY member, I have a much better understanding of thegifts given to us by the hard-working faculty of such a small school.

At Peace, it is clear that the students come first. Dinign with professors, Bes Spangler, Carol Hiscoe, and many others, they chatted easily about students, charting their growth from eager freshmen to ready-for-the-world seniors. It was impressive and also quite tender to be allowed into their community for the week.
