Yes, I've made a new word: Cleagiacs. These are the ultra-devoted fans of Pearl Cleage. (Some writers have readers; Pearl has FANS.) Anyway, all the people who have been writing me about the poem "We Speak Your Name", the poem which Oprah comissioned for her Legends ball- listen up. Miz Pearl will be performing this poem as part of her one-woman show at my alma mater, Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Here are the details:
An Evening with Pearl Cleage, her one-woman show, directed by her husband and long time collaborator, Zaron W. Burnett Jr., will include several pieces she premiered as part of the Just Us Theatre "Live at Club Zebra Series!" and "We Speak Your Names," a piece that was commissioned by Oprah Winfrey for her 2005 Legends Weekend.February 4, 8 p.m.
An Evening With Pearl Cleage

I must confess that I am a "Cleagiac". I am looking forward to her show here in the ATL. This show has been a heavy discussion topic at the past couple of book club meetings... I think we're suppose to be helping out in some way... But all I know is that we'll be there in our purple book club t-shirts! And I'm definitlely looking forward to the reading of that poem that I've heard so much about!

I would love to attend but unfortunatly I'll be in the Big Apple. I finished school in May 2004 and as I am discoverying more about Pearl Cleage, I often wish I could take a class of her's at Spelman. Ever hear of someone going back to school just to be in someone's class? I just might be tempted.
