Why I feel like someone just punched me?
I've loved Octavia Bulter for years.... from Kindred to Blood Child to Wild Seed.
I can't remember how I got my hands on Kindred, but I remember the experience of reading it. It was as if I was being transformed/traveling in time with Dana. This was a time in my life when I was "discovering" a boatload of African American writers, cross checking my list with the Norton's and Breaking Ice anthologies. I read everything I she wrote after that and actually did a "happy dance" in Borders last year when I saw Fledgling on the shelf.
Very, very sad day.

Yeah, I feel like the first commenter... Like someone has punched me...
I saw your "RIP Octavia Butler" post Sunday afternoon, while holding a copy of Fledging in my hands, and I stared at the title of your post for a long time, not believing it, hoping that it was a hoax or something...
I first read one of Octavia Butler's short stories titled "The Evening and the Morning and the Night" in the first Dark Matters Anthology. It blew me away! So unique, creative, and imaginative! I've read all but 2 of her books, and I am halfway through Fledgling, which is an exceptional work unto itself... The Bloodchild collection of short stories and essays... man, it was SOOO doggone good.
I feel a little better after blogging about it, but damn... it is still SO, SO, hard to understand and fully comprehend that we have lost one of the most unique African Americans writers that has ever lived. Damn!
