Well lookie here, the NYT has finally seen fit to run an obit for Octavia Butler-- a mere five days after the fact. Classy.

At least the NYT did get it in. The same can't be said for the Wash Post and my paper, the Baltimore Sun. But now maybe they will run something, since the NYT remains the standard of the industry. Hope all is well. Brent

Tacky, tacky, tacky as my mother would say! My all-time favorite book is KINDRED, and it is also the only book by Octavia Butler I have ever read as I am not a huge fan of sci-fi. However, reading the many tributes to this powerful writer across the world of blog over the last week, it is my intention to try at least one of her other works to start. Maybe/Hopefully her death will be an impetus to increase readership of her books amongst black folks...hmmmmm, I guess it could happen!
Tayari, I love your site especially your blog, and I hope you skulk around the outskirts of my blog from time to time [since you rarely comment I'm told], as I think you might enjoy yourself there. As a matter of fact, your blog sent me to Nichelle Trambles blog where an excerpt from her interview with Elizabeth Gilbert became the stimulus for my most recent post...six degrees of separation maybe?

Hi Tayari,
Your website is calming.
I am deeply sorrowed by the death of Octavia Butler.
She is one of my favorite authors. Wild Seed and Patternmaster are two of my favorite books. I have read all of her books and love the rest equally.
I never had the opportunity to meet Octavia Butler, but I had her phone number but was afraid to call. Now I will never get the opportunity.
Her work is phenominal and I always recommend her to everyone when speaking of great writers.
I will definitely read your work now that I am aware it exists.
I hope to see your work from "script to screen."
Peace
