The Writing Life
As I have written in earlier entries, I was at the AWP Conference in Austin, Texas. Really, I was there. You can ask anybody. I even gave a paper. But it seems that I missed all the drama. Kate Braverman, in an event sponsored by her press (Graywolf), went off and denounced the press, dissed her editor, and had an all out hissy-fit. I am just now hearing about it and that is b/c I saw it on Ed's blog.
There seems to be scuttlebutt as to whether or not she made Graywolf look bad, or whether she just made herself look bad. I wasn't there and I don't even have an opinion about the matter in question. I just have to say that the idea of a writer having a public fit and denoucing the corporate publishing machine gives me a little thrill.
In this business, we are all urged never to be pissed off in public, particularly if you are pissed off by your published. Don't burn your bridges! And Don't Forget, THEY HAVE YOUR BOOK! And so on. And all of this is really good advice. But how lovely it would be to be able to vent your anger in public just once, bridges be damned.
Oh Ms. Braverman, I don't know if you are in the right with your squabble with Graywolf, but it must have felt wonderful to let it all melt down on that podium in front of everybody.
