The Writing Life

As evidenced by the drama surrounding Representative Cynthia McKinney, black women have a complicated relationship with thier hair. Those of you who know me, know that I am (to quote Digable Planets) a "plaits, twists, or braids" kind of sister. However, my new novel, The Bigamist's Daughters, involves the proprietress of a small hair salon. So, what's a dedicated writer to do? Research!
I made an appointment to see Elias, of Elias IV Hair, and booked myself for an old-fashioned press and curl. You can see the rest of the photos, here. And, you can email Elias, here.

OK, I'll be the first one to weigh in here. Your hair straightened gives you a more sophisticated look. Your hair natural makes you look younger.
Are you planning to stay with the straight hair 'cause you know how much work is involved. Rain is not your friend, humidity will scare ya, you will need a wardrobe of curlers, scarves, combs, clips, hats and stuff. You will become a slave to the weather report. Hair never looks better than the day you leave the salon and so you go find everybody you know so they can see what it looked like before you sleep on it cause Day 2 is never as good as Day 1.
I am not one to talk, though. I gave up the natural look the day I looked in the mirror and all I could see was circles, curls and wrinkles. Chemically straightening my hair shaved off some years and made some of the wrinkles less notable. Like you said, black women have an uneasy relationship with their hair and you know we sistah girls love to hate on a bad head. (I am now thinking of the Washington Post article on Cynthia McKinney and her bad hair day).
It's all about choice. I give you a week before you start remembering why you chucked it all for natural hair. I hope your research helps you find the information you need for your next book. Your hair is gorgeous and it looks high maintenance.

I think your hair looks extremely beautiful, I too get a press and curl and my biggest problem is keeping it straight while I work out....I don't know what to do when it comes to my workouts....but you look really pretty.

I just took out my braids, which I have worn for years and press and curled my hair. It looks beautiful. I can't go outside or take a shower, let alone workout!! How on earth can I wear my hair in this lovely style and maintain a normal life!! HELP !! Janet

I have a suggestion to maintain a press and curl and works well for me. Now I don't dare workout with a press and curl...that ain't happening. However I do take hot showers and my hair holds up very well...my secret? I sleep with and take my shower with large plastic (the kind they use for roller sets) rollers and it helps keep my hair curled and gives it body and keeps it straight. Now at first, you may find it hard to sleep with these but after a while...you'll be fine. Your hair will become trained with them!!! Even in humidity...my hair holds up better...just my two cents...Also I cover my hair with a silk bonnet and then I large silk scarf (the ones they sale in the beauty supply store) and then put a shower cap over my head...that helps keep the moist out and I take a shower with the door open and the shower curtain half open (don't worry no water gets on the floor) I do this so no steam builds up that will cause my hair to fall and it works great!!!
