Tayari's Blog: The Voice of Zora

My buddy, Eric Beaumont, sent me this link to a recording of Zora Neale Hurston's voice. (Be warned that you have to go about halfway down the page to get to the audio.) Eric doesn't have sound on his computer so he asks that those of you that listen, comment to let him know what Zora sounded like.

What a treat! As I listened to Zora's voice, it reminded me of that intonation that so many people in my family had and still have. I am a native of Florida and when your folk come from the "country" as much of Florida was for black folk in the 20s, 30s and 40s, you learn a certain rhythmic way of speaking. As I listened to the recordings, I closed my eyes and heard echoes of my mother and aunts in Zora's voice. Thanks for the link.
