The Writing Life
As you know, I journey to NYC last week to be photographed by Marion Ettlinger. If you visit her web site, you will see that she takes lovely photographs of writers. If you travel in writerly circles, you know what these folks look like in real life and you will understand that she is not only a photographer, but a magician as well.
I was supposed to get Ettlingered a couple of years ago, but there was a snafu with with timing and I ended up with a lovely photo taken by my neighbor, Richard Powers. That was a kick. But I still wanted my serious, dramatic, author photo. Last month, I emailed Marion and asked her if there were any openings. There were, and I hopped on the ‘Hound. On the four hour trip, I tried not to worry too much about my suitcase packed to the brim with all my best clothes
I took a gypsy cab from Brooklyn to Chelsea to Marion’s studio. I pulled my stuffed suitcase into the elevator which was operated by a real-life elevator operator! I got to her door and I paused. I wasn’t sure what to expect. She takes such glam photos and I wondered what she would think upon looking at me— fresh from the Greyhound! Finally, I knocked. She smiled and hugged me. (I respond well to hugs.)
Marion Ettlinger is a small woman with a lovely head of tumbly hair. I tugged my suitcase over the threshold and found that she had prepared a small buffet—strawberries, cookies, chocolate drops, almonds. We chatted for a few; I nibbled nervously. Then she asked to see my clothes. Now this was the moment I had been waiting for or dreading. I shyly pulled out my stuff.
“Let’s see,” she said. “We can eliminate the green dress.”
“Okay,” I said. “That’s fine.”
“Let me see you in the black top and the red skirt.”
“Okay,” I said.
“Wait. Let me steam the skirt.”
“Okay,” I said again, fighting the urge to apologize for the wrinkles.
She looked at the clock. “It’s noon. Would you like a glass of wine?”
What can I say about the six hours that followed? It was great fun. I am pretty sure that I could never be a model. Holding poses is difficult when you’re out of shape! But it was fun to flounce on a chaise lounge in a strapless gown. Wearing a more restrained outfit, I rested my face in the hands and tried to look serious. “Give me just a drop of levity,” Marion said. I worked hard to comply without breaking out in a major grin.

Hi Tayari! You commented on the book list part of my blog this morning, so I thought I'd pop over to yours - love it! The photo shoot sounds like a ton of fun - especially with the noon-time offer of wine to relax you. Congratulations!

Um... I want to know what she said about that Pink Fur Coat... you neglected to mention your stroll-wear...
6 hours? Damn that's a long time!! Is that the norm for those types of photo shoots?

you are only perpetuating the problem by creating more racial difference here, enciting ever more hate (against yourself and mr. penzler, who isn't even black).
in hopes of your soul's healing -
love and light and prayers to you
may god bless and keep you colorless forever
above the hateful fray
