It's probably just grumpy old me, but was anyone else disturbed by the line in the Salon review that said, ""Them" is so frank, so devoid of phony uplift and so animated by semi-reportorial urgency that most readers, I suspect, will forgive it for not being better written." Nathan McCall is an experienced writer. Shouldn't he be held to the same high standards for fictional writing as anyone else? I just don't think the same comment would be made about a white author. Low expectations for Black people can be deadly. We have plenty of authors (you, for example, Tayari) who stand head-to-head with any other group of authors. Shouldn't McCall's editor have demanded the same from him?
