Keith Josef Adkis is dishing about his time as an assistant to a famous black woman writer, but he won't say her name. Galleycat says its an easy guess. The article is here. And here are the clues:

  • She's a she
  • She was up-and-coming when he worked for her
  • She is rude in public
  • She publishes with Random House
  • She has a son
  • she lives (lived) in California
  • she has won several "top notch" awards. (See this is what threw me off. I was of course thinking about who you are thinking about. But then I was thinking "has she won any top notch awards? Then I was thinking that KJA may not be a really literary dude and may have different ideas about which notch is top....

    So, what do you think?

And I should also say that the article itself is sort of luke-warm for the dish factor. I mean, being an assistant is a rough job. I've done it. I pray I won't do it again. I pray that one day I'll have the means to hire an assistant and I hope that I will be a bit more sane than the woman I assisted, but then again, the reason you need an assistant is that your life is driving you insane. But the article is a little bit of drama taking up a loooot of column inches. And if he is writing about who I think he is writing about, he shouldn't mess with her over something this small. She. Will. Get. Him. Back.

I've been trying to figure that one out as well. I guess Bebe Moore Campbell. KJA says "a woman, African-American, lived in California and the musical predecessor to Rock-n-Roll was the muse that made her pen go buck-wild and win a few top-notch awards." Bebe lived in California. The musical predecessor to rock & roll would i think be the blues--her first novel was "Your Blues Ain't Like Mine". She lived in California. has been published by Random House. And she can't retaliate.

    wow, jamey.
i thought that too, but was really not trying to go there. what poor form to speak ill of the recently transitioned, for no really good reason. i hope that this guess is not correct.
i found the post to be pretty unsatisfying, in both the "dish factor," as Tayari offers, and the sort of life lessons department. one wonders why the author would bother. ...which leads me to think it might just be the inimitable Ms. Mc. If this is true, we should see a fiery response, police reports and a conversation about it on the Tyra banks show, fairly soon [which would be a good reason to post-- especially if you have something coming out soon to plug!]

Another clue: he mentions Colorado. Waiting to Exhale's 1st setting is Denver.

Having met Bebe Moore Campbell and a couple of occasions I couldn't imagine she was the author in question, and I really can't think of any great awards that TM has won. Unfortunately that left me to wonder if in fact it was Maya Angelou - heaven forbid.

I missed a line about the woman in question being rude in public and I would have to say I have never seen Dr. Angelou act in this manner. Still pondering....
