Tayari's Blog: Gone, But Not Forgotten

  • In my contemporary African-American literature class, we read Anthony Groom's magnificent novel, Bombingham. This is the 45th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.
  • We also watched Spike Lee's heartbreaking documentary, 4 Little Girls.
  • And Stereohyped points out the link between that disgraceful happening and a recent attack on an Ohio mosque. (Weigh in, Mr. Obama. Weigh in, Mr. McCain! To remember "I have a dream" without remembering the other events of that important year is a crime.)

"Bombingham" is one of those superb novels that sees to have fallen between the cracks. I'm glad that your students read it on this very painful anniversary.
